The screening test for colorectal cancer changed on November 18, 2013. The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) replaces the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) as the laboratory screening test. The FIT collection is simpler for patients - only one specimen collection is required. The FIT has no dietary or medication requirements. Starting November 18, 2013 patients with a requisition having a FOBT request will be given a FIT collection kit. The FIT collection kits will be available at all DynaLIFEDx patient care centres and northern hospital outpatient collection laboratories. Specimens on fecal occult blood cards will continue to be accepted until the revised clinical practice gastrointestinal (GI) guidelines are implemented provincially. Currently specimens will be accepted either in fecal immunochemical test containers or on fecal occult blood cards.
