WHY AM I ASKED TO VERIFY PERSONAL INFORMATION WHEN I VISIT THE LAB?
It is very important the laboratory have correct and complete information from you. This information will allow us to return your test results to your doctor as quickly as possible, and also follow up on any special requests for copies to consulting physicians. Ensuring we have complete information from you allows us to give your physician the most complete and accurate results possible. Please bring your Personal Health Care Card with you to the laboratory to help us verify your information quickly.
WHY DO I HAVE TO WAIT TO HAVE MY BLOOD DRAWN?
At any Patient Care Centre, our goal is to provide service as quickly as possible. Some testing requires that patients are collected at specific times and in these cases those patients must take priority. The laboratory staff will endeavor to collect your specimens as quickly as possible and appreciate your patience in those instances when a short wait is necessary. To avoid the need to wait for your tests, book an appointment online for your collection at the Patient Care Centre.
DO I HAVE TO BE FASTING FOR MY BLOOD TEST?
Some tests require that you fast for accurate results. Common tests that require you to fast are:
| Lipid profile: |
minimum 12 hour fast (9 hours if you are diabetic) |
| Fasting glucose: |
8 - 16 hour fast |
| Both fasting lipid and glucose: |
12 - 16 hour fast (9 hours if you are diabetic) |
WHAT DOES FASTING REALLY MEAN?
Fasting means that you must not have anything except water to eat, drink or chew. This includes coffee, juice, tea, alcohol, chewing gum or other candy or lozenge. You may drink water, but not more than usual. Please check with your doctor regarding any medications that you are taking, and do not discontinue these unless requested by your doctor to do so.
For more detailed instructions regarding fasting and other laboratory procedures, please see our Patient Instructions.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY DOCTOR TO GET RESULTS?
Depending upon your doctor's test request, testing may be routed to different laboratories. "STAT" testing is reserved for a medical emergency and is given top priority. Many routine test results will be completed in the same day and most will be provided to your doctor's office within 1 week. Certain specialized testing may require a longer time for completion. Call your doctor’s office to confirm if your laboratory results are available before you book your follow-up appointment.
WHAT ARE THE TESTS MARKED ON MY REQUISITION FOR?
Doctors have many reasons, which can vary from patient to patient, for ordering a particular test. It is recommended that you speak with your doctor about his/her specific concerns. General information can be found on-line at www.labtestsonline.org. Lab tests on-line is not intended to provide medical advice or to replace the expertise or experience of your health care practitioner. HOW CAN I MAKE MY CHILD'S BLOOD TEST EASIER?
We would like to make your child's experience with us as pleasant as possible. Here are some ideas for preparing your child for his or her blood test:
- Please do not tell your child that their blood test won't hurt. Explaining that there will be a small pinch, but that it will be over quickly, is an honest explanation that will not mislead your child.
- If you are very anxious, your child will be very anxious. If you feel that you would rather not be in the room, please convey this to the lab staff.
- We will explain to your child what will be happening, and will never "sneak up" on them.
- We will always draw the minimum amount of blood that will allow for all testing to be done.
- If you have any questions or concerns, please ask.
HOW DO I LABEL MY SAMPLE THAT I BRING FROM HOME?
On occasion, you may collect a sample, such as a urine, at home. In order for the laboratory to properly identify your sample, please make sure the container is labelled with your full name and your health care number. When you deliver the specimen to the laboratory, please wait until the lab staff have checked for all necessary information on both the requisition and the specimen before you leave.
